-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll leave aside the fact this fan release bizarrely closes out with 20 minutes
from the Lovesexy Dortmund broadcast and concentrate only on the San Jose show
as even I cannot see the connection between the two recordings, and I'm
mystified as to why it is has been included. The Hit N Run shows are hardly
Prince's finest hour in terms of flexing his musical muscle, but this is a
decent show and an extremely impressive audience recording. The audience level
throughout is extremely minimal with the show being clear and upfront. The
recording is so good it's certainly a match for any of the pressed releases from
this tour. The show itself is the penultimate of the Hit N Run tour, and whilst
it lacks anything out of the ordinary, it is a nice document of the tour.
Thankfully the Najee solo's and Kip Blackshire input which marred many of the
other shows is far less intrusive on here, and the show is all the better for
it. 'Purple Rain' is a lengthy 13 minutes and incorporates a religious sermon as
was normal for the time. The encore section is really the only noteworthy part
of the show, and unfortunately one of the most basic (comprising of only 3
songs) with a fair amount of audience participation, including the great chant
"There's too much booty in the pants" directed at one of the dancers on stage.
As mentioned before, the inclusion of part of the Dortmund 88 show is baffling,
and as enjoyable as it is, it would have been better left off. Overall this is
an excellent, very impressive recording from the 2nd last show of the tour. The
fact the set-list is predictable is a slight let-down, but is in no way
detrimental to the release.
